Counsellor, Family Systemic Therapist & Clinical Supervisor
Helen New
I’m Helen Newman and I am a Counsellor, Family Systemic Therapist and Clinical Supervisor.
I have a BA (Hons) degree in Communication Studies and a range of therapeutic qualifications.
My initial counselling training led me to working in schools in the South East, setting up therapeutic services for schools and coordinating counselling programmes for young people. I have managed two very busy and successful therapeutic services working with clients aged 10 to 25 years. I have always maintained a clinical caseload since qualifying in 2000 and have also worked in schools as a play therapist.
My passion and experience is working with children, young people and families and I qualified with The Institute of Family Therapy in 2019 as a Systemic Practitioner.
I offer a talking therapy and creative therapy to children, adults, young people and families. My approach to counselling is ‘Client-Centred’ having been trained in a number of modalities; Psychodynamic, Person-Centred, Existential, CBT and as a Family Systemic Practitioner.
I believe in friendly and approachable therapy as I recognise the difficulty and courage it can take for many people to seek therapeutic help for personal problems. I believe it is firstly the relationship between counsellor and client(s) which provides the foundation to explore, understand, challenge and change patterns of behaviour which are causing relationship difficulties and personal distress.
I have worked with a broad range of issues over the years including:
- Relationship issues
- Anxiety and Fear
- Depression and Low Mood
- Trauma
- Self Esteem and Confidence Issues
- Life choices and Existential Crisis
- Obsessional Compulsive Disorder
- Attachment difficulties
- Perfectionism
- Loss and Bereavement
- Family relationship problems
- Eating difficulties
I am an accredited member of the British Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy
I have a current Enhanced DBS
